  • "The Future of the Euro"

"THE CRISIS AND RECOVERY"

On 29 April, the EIN published a collection of speeches given at its seminars during late 2008 and early 2009 on 'The Crisis and Recovery' to coincide with the start of the EPP Party Congress. The collection includedes the following items:

30 March 2009 Seminar
"ENERGY + ENVIRONMENT: NEW OPTIONS"

This seminar in Madrid, being organised with FAES, wil consider two key aspects of the current debate on envirnment policy: 'the Future of Nuclear Energy in Europe' and 'Greening the Economy and Competitiveness'.

All EIN event are by invitation only but conclusions and papers will be circulated as a contribution to the wider debate.

4 March 2009 Breakfast Meeting
"AFGHANISTAN AND PAKISTAN"

Mr José María Robles Fraga, former Spanish Ambassador to Pakistan, led a breakfast discussion on the crisis in Afghanistan and its relationship to Pakistan. He argued in favour of a much more active European approach to the region with European political leaders prioritising the development of much closer relations with Pakistan in line with Europe's fundamental security interests.

19 February 2009 Seminar
"EU-CHINA RELATIONS"

This keynote speech at this seminar was give by Zhang Zhijun, Vice-Minister, People's Republic of China.

Dr Paul Irwin Crookes
gave a presentation and was joined on the panel by Ambassador Eduardo Aznar, a Spanish Diplomat and specialist in China.

16 February 2009 Seminar
"WHAT VALUES SHOULD EUROPE PROMOTE IN THE WORLD?"

This seminar considered some of the underlying reasons behind the current economic and social crisis by considering the place of values in the current debate and in the global community.

Stefano Riela, Fondazione ResPublica, discussed Economic and Social Values, whilst René Leray, Professor of the Institut d'Etudes européennes, focused on question of peace and human security.

The wider global context was considered in more detail by Nicolas Tenzer, Director of CERAM, who outlined the key long term factos of influence of Europeans in the world, and Erna Hennicot-Schoepges MEP, who analysed the importance of a dialogue of cultures.

Jan Olbrycht MEP and Inigo Mendez de Vigo MEP looked at the political and governance dimension.

28 January 2009 Breakfast meeting
"THE GEOPOLITICS OF GAS IN EUROPE: CHALLENGES BEYOND THE UKRAINIAN-RUSSIAN CRISIS" 

In the light of the recent gas crisis, Dr Susanne Nies led this breakfast discussion meeting in considering the wider question of European gas policy and its impact on regional geopolitics, the future economic development of the Union, and the challenge of investing sufficiently in energy infrastructure in the medium to long-term.

"EIGHTY YEARS AFTER THE CRASH OF 1929: WHAT LESSONS FOR TODAY?"

Under the Chairmanship of Jaime Major Oreja, Vice Chairman of the EPP Group, responsible for Political Strategy and the European Ideas Network, this special joint seminar with FAES placed the current financial crisis in a wider historical context. 

Professor Jean-Christophe Defraigne
, Institute of European Studies, FUSL -UCL, reflected on the lessons to be drawn from the way the 1929 re-ordered the world economic order. Professor Pedro Schwarz, Faculty of Economics, Universidad San Pablo CEU, Madrid, looked its long-term legacy of the crash. Alain-Gerard Slama, Philosopher and Historian, Sciences Po, Paris, analysed its political and ideological impact.

26 January 2009 Seminar
"THE SOCIAL AGENDA: THE IMPACT OF THE FINANCIAL CRISIS ON DAILY LIFE, EMPLOYMENT AND INCOMES"

This seminar broadened the EIN's work on the financial crisis by considering its social impact, focussing on employment and particularly on opportunities for the young and old.  

The opening address was given by Alain Lamassoure MEP, former French Minister for European Affairs; on the subject of 'Mobility and freedom of choice: a real world agenda for European mobility' based on a report he had submitted to President Sarkozy. 
 

Dirk Hudig,
Chairman of EIN Working Group on Employment, Skills and Human Capital, spoke on 'Job creation: Preparing for the Recovery: focusing on job creation and SMEs'. Johan Bortier, UNIZO, looked at the challenges faced by those in self-employment: Branislav Stanicek, Administrator RELEX, Committee of the Regions, addressed the question of the young generation whilst Philippe Brongniart, former Director General, Suez Group, considered the needs of older citizens. Gilles Dryancour,
Director, Government relations, John Deere & Company, gave a stimulating and thought-provoking presentation on the need to reform social security systems. 
 

The meeting was closed by a keynote address
by Jacques Barrot, Vice-President of the European Commission, on the efforts to pursue a society of progress for the individual in the face of the crisis.
